One Oh Eight and Counting!

One Oh Eight and Counting!

Again. Easily my worst golf outing, Sunday. Competition Jink.
Driving not working. Mind game poor. Confidence all-time-low.
Quit golf?

No. Love the game too much to quit. Golfing friends are great and supportive especially one that won my money. LOL.

For now I am a laughing stock but like all things, is is a slide, free fall sort of way!

BUT the good thought remains. It is mind-game really and I know I can play the game but has to start between the ear first.

Let see what the different club could do.

Congratulation JS and AP.

cheers.

ഓനെ ഓ ഫൌര്‍!

Christmas is coming and some people's game reflect that. Hard training and daily dose of driving range sessions provide no relief to this nightmare of scoring eight in every round. Maybe I should resign to this and play golf online instead. Try this.

Online Putting Practice.

16 November, 2009

One Oh One!

For the last two weeks I have been drilling it out hard at the driving range hoping to fix something about my swing mechanic. Sadly as always not everything need fixing. For example the snow man. You cannot fix a snowman. You just got to live with it and it will soon melt away!

As found out by JB, JS and RGS last Sunday.

I could score on some 'easy' holes but during winter like yesterday at KGS, snowman could leap from anywhere anytime.

I think my next trip is heading to the Scandinavian countries on how not to create snowman during 'landas' season.

Good Grief Gracious Golf!
One Oh One after weeks of heavy drilling is no thrill.

Is it my putting?

Bad shot good result.

A birdie in every round would be nice but its hard thing to come by especially for vertically challenged guy and a short hitter like me. When it came it was not really expected compared to the way it presented itself. Some birdie came coated with luck. In golf it would be wrong not to expect the unexpected and as in life, good things often come when you least expect it and the outcome is often stranger then fiction.

I was badly roasted by the time we finished the front nine - two snowmen and many doubles. After a horrible slice on the ninth hole my ball found it way into the watery grave. I took a penalty drop and lashed the ball with my wood three into the green. The ball found its way into the sloppy side of the left bunker. I recall my coach told me that a bunker shot should be three times harder than normal and the weight distribution should be on the left leg. No problem there as the lie seemed to be tilting right to left. I was not careful though as my swing did not penetrated beneath the sand. My Sand wedge found the equator of the ball instead. It lashed out of the bunker, found another bunker and completely overran it and rolled the next green. Must be lots of octane in the ball. The result? An eight! Or in the normal Sunday lingo, a snowman! No? Throw towel. Another 53 on the front nine. Just when everything seems fine, calamity strikes.

That left me fuming but no tantrum. I consider myself a real golfer (tonyemma.blogspot.com). The journey to the next tee box for the next nine was an agonizing but also an analyzing one. A golfer would just strike a smile and move one. For me, its time to change tactic. Rethinking and re-adjust, re-do re-format and a reformation. LOL. As the course was getting tighter it was time to hit with purpose and accuracy rather than distance without aim. So my weapon of choice was a 20 degrees hybrid. Simple but straight. But if everything were to work according to plan every single time, human race would loose their problem-solving ability. My score was far from good, a word that do not sound so good. My score did not reflect my ability of play – not that I put unrealistic standard on my ability. A bogey, double bogey etc was the common score. Maybe I should just whack a driver on a par 5. As long as I remember the drill I should be better sooner rather than later. One thing is certain. My slice is (almost) as uncommon as snow in Las Vegas. So what the heck? So I tool my S-Yard driver and got the setup right. At least that was what I thought. Swing from the inside along the aligned stance and follow through as though my life depended on it. The ball flew from the tee along the correct draw path but turn too much to the left. That was a hook! At Siena Golf School Range it would be the desert. On Sarawak Club golf and Resort it was moving on the left tarmac at 85 MPH on hole 14 towards the unfriendly native territory infested with crocodile. My flight mates indicated that the ball might have found the water. At that point, my interest on the game was an all-time low. Lost the first nine, one down and a potential nightmare ahead! Then I recalled the negative thoughts. My last game on this hole last week yielded was an eight! Not again. But in golf every shot is unrepeatable right?

As I retraced the way my ball rolled, I was met with a pleasant surprise. Astonishing. The ball was save. It was held by few blade of grass on the edge of the pond slightly inside the hazard. That means no grounding of club. A shot one would seldom practice at the driving range. The game presented and demanded a unique hitting skill in this situation. That’s the beauty. I took my 7-iron, adjust my stance along the limited space. An inch of moment I would have the pond waiting for my fancy golf wear. The ball was higher than my feet and I remember on that situation one should choke slightly to make sure that the club is level to the ground. I swing along the inside path and managed to hit the ball clean. It jerked and flew upward toward the cloud and dropped about hundred metres to where I wanted it – middle of the centre. Momentarily I was in cloud-nine. No done yet as my third shot would require a more focussed head. True enough the ball settled on a hard bare ground. With 150 metres to go and a water drain waiting at just before the green, my next aim was to hit above the pin.

I took the same 7-iron, a club I have used in practice a thousand time at the range and prepare for a draw stance. With calmness and motivation I drilled the ball straight. I did not hit it clean and instead hit right at the equator of the ball but with enough velocity that it actually dropped shot of the green but with enough pace to climbed it way up and settled about 10 feet of the pin for regulation on. Bad shot good result. I’ll take it. For golfer, that was one of the best sights to behold. Walking to the green still 150 metres away with a putter in your hand. In my case it was a Ceiri made Heavy putter, 750 gram 303 steel! I did not think much of the consequence if I miss the putt. After I read the line, I putted it straight into the hole for a birdie! That putt was the game-changer for me. I was 4 up immediately. My nemesis told me so as I was not very concern what a winning putt could brings. When you play golf your flight member should do the talking. And as the script would have it, the rest of the holes were just a walk in the park. That was the last duty for my S-Yard driver. No more driver but Hybrid straight drive in the middle. At the last par 5, I split the fairway and won the longest drive (LD) not because I hit long but my drive was the only one on the fairway 175 metres from the tee-box and still a good 300 metres to the pin! LOL. The other three guys just shot them selves on the foot and loose their way! For the approach shot, my pitching fell short and flew straight into the green side bunker. What a waste and followed by my bunker shot that felled 20 short of the pin to give me an uphill putt. All I need was a double to win. I took my time and made sure of the correct line break. I just drilled the ball left of the hole since the elevation presented a left to right break but not much. My ball rolled up and settle on the left lip stayed there for a millisecond and hurtfully (for my nemesis) rolled into the hole for a nice bogey! Game over. I’ve just turned a nightmare round into a 5-hole win! Thank you very much.

3 Oct 2009 - One Oh Four

Low ROI, High Risk. That's what we can describe JS scoreline. A One Oh Four!!!! ( layman says 104). We do not condone good play and JS is our ambassador. We do hear the shout and scream and the bravado plus the humility though. That guy is good from the bunker over and over again. That explain my lack of sleep Saturday night. "Ne Re Nga Nymem Moon skorah?" Like a roller coaster, golf game has its up and down. Wait some people has more down and other always up. Why? JB should be able to pass his opinion on that. On his good day, JB could roast the field. Initial LD is written all over the shaft. On his bad day, my favourite time, his infamous Honma slam the baddest atop there Borneo height where it met its match and did not do better down at Siol and Demak. That's four up by lunch time JB. Soon I'll have my hand's full. China here I come.

AP, the famous "top of the pop" play today still managed a respectable 99! Ma Dato! 99?

I hear cries from KL that this blog promotes unbalanced and outright controversial content. Blog exist just for that and I cannot help it with score like that.

To be continued...

APIWATW ( A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words)

Upping The Ante at Borneo Height!

Once in awhile in an ideal world, one should spend time on a higher ground to have a better view of the world below. Only then will one be able to see things in a new perspective and dimension. Take for example our recent trip to the Bidayuh Golf Course ( an unofficial name though ). My first impression was thought to be very common, quiet road curving through lust landscape with cool breeze coupled with an odour of success.

( Heading into the mist just for golf! )

Andrew Joseph (AP) flatly "SMSed" me to express his fear of driving up to the resort. Fear no more. The road up is as gentle as Sharifah Aini's..." But on a curious note, as with anyone associated with the first trip, memory and a good one is a must. But by topping the golf ball constantly is not my idea of "higher-level game". But that exactly what AP did. Hmm I wonder if that's a typical fear associated with anything first-time. The jungle though will have lots to wonder whose iron is erratic as ball after ball settled in the jungle. Hole 16 was roasted with AP's miss hits!

RGS didn't do well although the mere act of playing up there is a good memory by itself. JS? "This guy is good at the bunker!". Watch bunker at hole 19! You may not get out of it by one shot. My good friend only time will tell if his swing is as good up at the mountain as in KGS. No room for error! JB? JB bo. "What do you think if my standard?" I think nothing of standard after his ball richochet off the big rock 90 degree west! Not a chance JB.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Lets see.

Chance to shine at SIC Golf

On 25th September, 2009 YB Datuk Peter Nansian Nguse was officially appointed by Dato Sri William Mawan Ikom was appointed as "Community Captain" in conjunction with the Sarawak Inter-Community Golf 2009. As a Bidayuh, I then deduce what this mean is that our YB Datuk Peter will spearhead as the captain of the Bidayuh Community Team.

So as a fellow Bidayuh I urge who ever represents our community to support and play your guts out. It is an honour as I believe those selected are not merely making the number but out of merit with high hope that he would carry the good name of the Bidayuh with high golf integrity and honesty. I would also add that these selected would not merely there to wear fancy sponsored T-shirt but it represents an opportunity to shine in your golf game.

As always, YB Datuk Peter has already in place dedicated men who will sweat it out to serve and organise the team which I think what the Bidayuh is famous for, team spirit, solidarity and co-operation... especially in golf (tempted to say so!). Straunch and avid golfer like Andrew Joseph, James Sinjeng and many more are onhand to offer their free service. ( no accounting fee James please). Don't be sentitive you guys if your name is not being mentioned. Many choose to be silent supporters. Yes I heard you right.

Come 17th October, unfortunately few members of the glamour group are missing as PP choose wisely to be with his Nipponic gang somewhere in Japan. JB have also cleverly booked to be in China. Hmm are'nt we ever get tired of the slits?

Me? Oh yes. According to my recent golf results, I am indeed badly in need of a new swing guru. Not quite Hank Haney but close. Remember, the last time I changed my swing, I lost my balance and almost my wife too! So sadly as much as I like to be in the team (not automatic choice I know but I always think positive) I will be somewhere at the Las Vegas Stripp or Black Mountain Golf School. ( ahem ).

Wait you JS, AP, JB, PP.....

Oh, here's the probable line up for the Bidayuh Community Team as released by JS.
As you can see, your faithfully is obviously MIA.

FAMILY FEUD: THE REAL WAR

Any day, any time and on any course, PP and AP would brush-off any challenger hands down.
But when it comes to crunch putt, well they'll be there just for the crump! especially when there are important games and during tournament, the pressure is JEST TOO MUCH to bear. Some people.

JS on the other hand takes his time in stride. He learned his lesson and be damn one day his executive hole exploit might just bear a hole-in-one. One day that is. Hmm need I add more?

Yes. Next tournament. Next challenge.
